Thiopurine

Indications

Maintenance of remission of CD and UC in adults and children 2–17 years old. Monitor blood tests as per local/national guidelines.

Contraindications

Caution in hepatic or renal impairment or reduced thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) activity (measure before starting treatment). Avoid in pregnancy and discontinue while breastfeeding. | Potential side effects: Anaemia; reduced appetite; bone marrow depression; diarrhoea; hepatic disorders; hepatotoxicity (more common at high doses); low white blood cell and platelet count; oral disorders; pancreatitis; nausea; vomiting
